CITY OF FLUSHING

PUBLIC NOTICE

On Thursday, February 19, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the City of Flushing experienced a discharge of untreated sanitary wastewater from its sanitary sewer system.

The discharge is the result of surcharge conditions within the collection system caused by an inverted siphon not conveying flow as designed. As a result, wastewater surfaced from a downstream manhole within the system. The cause of the siphon malfunction is currently under investigation. The condition remains ongoing currently, and City personnel are actively working to identify and correct the issue.

The discharge consists of untreated sanitary wastewater and has the potential to reach the Flint River.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Genesee County Health Department have been notified as required by law. Officials of Flushing Township, Montrose Township, and the City of Montrose have also been notified.

Public Health Advisory:

The Genesee County Health Department recommends avoiding contact with the Flint River downstream of the release until further notice.

The City of Flushing is taking corrective measures and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

Please disseminate this information to the public as soon as possible to protect public health and prevent unnecessary exposure.

Respectfully,

Jeffrey Clark
Director of Public Works
