Police Chief

The Charter Township of Flushing is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Police Chief to lead our police department, due to the retirement of the current chief. The chief provides the leadership and management for the township police department. The township is a largely agricultural community of 10,660 residents located in northwest Genesee County within easy driving distance to Flint, Saginaw, and Lansing. The department consists of the chief, sergeant, detective, 6 full-time patrol officer, two school resource officers and several part-time officers. The police department if funded through a voter approved milage, the budget is in excess of $1 million. Flushing has an excellent school system, an active business district, a large park system with excellent outside activities. The chief is appointed by and reports to, the Township Supervisor, with approval of the Township Board. The position will be vacant September 1, 2022.

A successful candidate will hold a bachelor's degree with coursework in criminal justice, business administration, public administration, or a related field and have ten years of progressively more responsible experience in police service and supervision, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Graduation from the FBI National Academy or the Northwest School of Staff and Command (or equivalent) is desirable.

Demonstrable communication and interpersonal skills and experience in building effective working relationships within the community, police department, and township departments are a requirement. Effective skills related to crisis management, policy implementation, budgeting, emergency management, personnel management, media relations, event planning, resource allocation, and community involvement are highly desirable.

Applicants must be able to successfully complete a comprehensive character and criminal background investigation, health screening, drug screening, and must possess a valid Michigan Operators License with acceptable driving record and MCOLES certification.
Salary range for the position is $70,000 to $80,000 depending on qualifications and experience. The township also offers competitive fringe benefits.
